Gerry Adams, head of Sinn Féin, conferred with Mary McAleese when the president of the Irish Republic was on a visit to West Belfast. 
In late July, Adams helped lead efforts in getting the IRA to renounce the use of violence and instead pursue political means for its policies. 
In August, McAleese is expected visit the United States to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Milwaukee Irish Fest.
